How to polulate company fields

I recall reading the other day that when importing contact data, we will soon be able to import company fields as well. This was an issue when I first signed on. The address data, in particular, was imported for the contacts but not for the companies. I still have a huge majority of my companies that have the company name as the only data field. How will this new feature help current users like myself who currently has about 600 companies listed with one field (i.e. Company Name) that has any data in it?

On a related note, will there be any moves towards automatic population of address, website, fax, Main phone numbers etc when entering a new contact within an existing company. I work with upwards of 30 different contacts within the same company and I have to enter all of their address data every time I enter a new contact. It would be nice to be able to enter the company name and have all of the relevant fields for that company automatically populated.

Yes you heard it first - we are extending the CSV import to include support for company records.  You can re-import data to add additional fields of information to the existing records i.e. reimporting data will match and update records having identical names.  This is shaping up to be released early next week.

We don’t recommend copying data from the company to the contact record (copying any data in any system is generally not a good idea).

Instead, the contact is linked to the company that manages the common information.  The common address etc. is accessed by hovering the mouse over the company name, clicking on the company name etc.  When data is exported you are offered the choice of including the company fields in the report etc.
