Keyboard speed and response

As part of my testing (and to see if having ONE record in the dataset would then allow import of others, unfortunately, no), I entered myself.

I’m a reasonably decent typist, but NOT a speed whiz.

As I entered data and tabbed from field to field, I could (just barely) see that the tab order was correct, and it was in the right place.  However, my typing speed way outruns the “receipt, display and store” of keys pressed in this application.  I know that you’ve eliminated Save buttons, and are therefore saving either after each keystroke or when we leave a field.

I had to really slow down.  I had started in IE7, and after seeing the note on the Login page, I switched to Firefox.  It is definitely faster, but I’m a little disappointed, and a little concerned that it’s so browser-dependent.  Suggestions?

Greetings,

Data is saved when you leave a “dirty” field i.e. when data has changed in the field.  However, since the save only takes ~1 sec and keys are buffered you should not need to wait for the save to complete i.e. in most cases you should be able to keep typing and let the system catch up to you.  There will be no delay while typing in any single field (except autocomplete fields that will type the entry for you), or when tabbing through fields that have not changed).

It’s not that Solve360 is browser dependent (we support them all), it’s that not all browsers are created equal.  The speed difference between MSIE and Firefox/Safari is substantial (Safari 3 is faster than Firefox 3, but IE7 is at least 10x slower than both of them).  Firefox, Safari and Google Chrome are also about to get substantially faster in the next couple of months (focus on and optimization for web apps).  There is a thread that is following some early comparisons http://norada.com/forums/viewthread/108/  The improvements are huge…

Generally if you are a heavy user of Internet based applications (any applications not just ours) you need to be running Firefox or Safari since MS has basically given up; this is not likely to change with IE8.

I don’t know if this answers your question but I hope the background helps.

Thank you for your prompt response.  I should’ve been a little clearer.

In IE7, not only did there appear to be a delay but some of the first characters in the next field never did appear; the first characters to appear were “later” characters in the field.

I’ll try to do some more testing to clarify what we saw, just for the record. For now, we’ll plan to do any assessment of the system’s responsiveness in Firefox or Safari.  Thanks again!

IE7 does have a reputation for dropping characters from web forms (in any app) and it is generally related to IE’s poor performance (it can’t keep up).  This behavior is usually triggered by a slow/busy computer or, in some cases, the extra load caused by enabling IE7’s “phishing filter” (although I’ve seen it happen in ideal circumstances too).  Microsoft knows about this and recommends (among many other tips) that if you are having this problem you can reduce the amount of processing the browser needs to do (thus speeding it up a bit) by disabling the phishing filter feature.  Just for reference to disable the filter: Start IE7, press <ALT>, from the IE7 menu click Tools, Internet Options, click the Advanced tab, under the Security heading click Disable Phishing Filter, click Apply, click OK, restart IE7.
