Any way to add a second Category field, or to add a new Checkboxes field type?
Explanation—“Category” seems to be unique in that it allows more than one choice (several, in fact) to be selected at the same time.
For our press lists this is critical because a given reporter may cover both Energy and Environment, so that’s what we’re using the Category field for right now—reporter beats (or issue topics).
We really need a second Category-style field that also has this very useful feature of allowing more than one choice to be selected at the same time.
It could be a second set of buttons like Category, or some other format like Checkboxes (as in Filemaker Pro). Select Boxes don’t cut it because they only allow one choice off the pulldown menu.
We’d use that second field to link reporters to several client companies—so we could pull up Client A’s press list whenever we want to (including various people we’ve tagged for that client for any number of reasons including their various beats stored in Category), or Client B’s press list (with an overlapping set of people), or Client C’s press list (with still another overlapping set of people).
We thought of simply linking those reporters to the Company for each client in the standard way. But then on the Company screen wouldn’t we have hundreds or even thousands of names showing up as links? Since our worldwide press lists cover numerous beats (what we’re already using the Category field for), and consist of many many names.
If you did add Checkboxes, you could rename Select Box which seems misnamed because there are no boxes. Pulldown Menu or Dropdown Menu is what everyone seems to call those.
If you did add a second Category-style field, then custom names for the Category fields would be useful.
