Displaying many tags

I now have over 40 tags, for the many different reporter beats we pitch.

Trouble is, your new dropdown checkboxes format for displaying tags now scrolls off the bottom of my screen. That’s both when I’m adding new tags to an existing contact, and also when searching from the Show/Tabs dropdown.

I found a workaround—press the “down arrow” button to scroll the whole window. Sometimes this works smoothly, other times it’s herky-jerky. Not a problem for occasional searches from the drop-down menu, but less than user-friendly when updating many contacts at once.

Suggestion: Could you revert to the previous method of displaying all the tags on the screen at once, when in “Show Form” mode? And simply use the new format when in “Hide Form” mode?

Or else possibly display many tags in a multi-column window of checkboxes. Or something else I’m not thinking of.

This control is fairly “smart” in that it will reposition itself on the screen if there is allowable space, however when you are working with that many tags often there is not enough space - bigger monitor perhaps? ;)  Seriously, we plan to look into using a multi-column format for this dropdown when we implement filtering by multiple tags.

I just plugged the laptop in to the 22” external monitor.

On “Show Form,“ the first 11 tags display. The down arrow sometimes scrolls smoothly to the bottom of the list before jumping backwards; but sometimes reveals only one additional tag at a time. Then the cursor returns to the first tag, scrolls down, and reveals one more. So when that happens, it takes a minute or so to get to the bottom of the list of tags.

On “Hide Form,“ the first 27 tags display. Same story—sometimes the down arrow reveals only one more at a time, sometimes it scrolls.

So yes, multi-column format would be great.

Filtering by multiple tags will be very useful to us, but would encourage even MORE tags!
Even better would be multiple tag fields, as noted in my new feature request.

Back to this subject (well, kind of . . .)

Is there a way to arrange the tags in a certain order?  This would be very helpful when using the drop down list.

Currently, they are arranged in alpha order so I am able to do some rearranging thru numbering each tag, but we want to use a lot more tags and this will become cumbersome.  would like to group related tags together.

We are in commercial real estate.  would be nice to group tags that describe clients; property types; users; etc.

Anything in the works to address this issue?

Workaround:

Regarding the above post, I am able to group tags by categories by inserting a symbol as the first character on the tag.

Example:  I numbered our types of clients; inserted a * for user tags; inserted a ` for property types, etc.

It works, but I still can’t discern how the app alpha arranges the symbols.

Instead of just numbering I’d suggest adding a short a code the the front of the tag label that would force these new “groups” of tags, then within the group you could use numbers if there were still many of them e.g. p Strip, p Condo etc.

Also, just as a reminder tags are very versatile but you can also add custom fields to mange data in a more structured way (as it applies).

When we provide lists like this in a “natural” order clients often recognize it as a bug so the current standard is to sort everything we show.

Seems we posted at the same time smile  I hope those two concepts work together.

Hmmm.  Great minds think alike . . .

So, how does the alpha function work with symbols/codes?

They will sort according to the “ASCII character table” e.g. http://www.ascii-code.com (code 32 and higher).  They actually look neat when you just use them instead of text!

This works.  Thanks.
