Google’s latest step to speed-up your connection

Google recently launched the Google Public DNS.  It’s a free, global Domain Name System (DNS) resolution service, that you can use as an alternative to your current DNS provider.

They’ve posted a simple explanation about what DNS is and why it’s important.  Essentially when you open a web address like http://www.norada.com your computer first asks your ISP the question “what is the network address for http://www.norada.com ?“.  If your ISP’s DNS server is slow, your connection to the website will incur delays while it waits for the network addresses.

A similar service that’s been around for a while is http://www.opendns.com/

Interesting title to the post Steve, I’ve wondered whether or now Google will (could) use Public DNS to favor websites in their search results.  On the surface of the question, one might ask why; but ultimately, faster web sites = less time to index and a better user experience on Google.
